The Haft\u00a0<\/span>Tapeh<\/span>\u00a0Sugarcane Workers\u2019 Syndicate reported yesterday that<\/span>\u00a0at 11:55 PM, Sunday January 20<\/span>th<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a02019<\/span>\u00a0a caravan of fifteen patrol cars full of armed security\u00a0<\/span>and intelligence\u00a0<\/span>forces\u00a0<\/span>raided Esmaeil<\/span>\u00a0Bakhshi\u2019s house and have taken him away to an undisclosed location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Haft Tapeh<\/span>\u00a0workers<\/span>\u00a0syndicate stated that s<\/span>uch blatant display of armed repression is an indication of utter desperation from\u00a0<\/span>capitalists and their sponsors<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in their response to workers<\/span>\u2019<\/span>legitimate demands.<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>What is the meaning and aim of an armed attack on the residence of a worker in the dark of the night?<\/span>Sugarcane workers Syndicate strongly condemns this attack and demands the immediate and unconditional release of Messrs.\u00a0<\/span>Esmail Bakhshi, Ali Nejati and all other incarcerated workers.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Crucial Background<\/span>\u00a0information:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Esmaeil<\/span>\u00a0Bakhshi<\/span>, a representative of Haft Tapeh Sugarcane workers,<\/span>\u00a0was incarcerated for almost a month<\/span>, between Novemb<\/span>er 18, 2018 to December 12, 2018<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and subject to most horrendous forms of physical and psychological torture<\/span>\u00a0during his detention<\/span>. Upon his release Mr. Bakhshi issued a statement challenging the Minister of Intelligenc<\/span>e to a live television debate (see the link<\/span>\u00a0below<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0about his\u00a0<\/span>torture<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>while he was incarcerated. Mr. Bakhshi\u2019s bold response has garnered him tremendous public support and also caused a massive, public response about the issue of torture\u00a0<\/span>under the Islamic Republic of Iran<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to discredit Esma<\/span>e<\/span>il<\/span>\u00a0Bakhshi<\/span>\u00a0and the claim of torture in Iran\u2019<\/span>s detention centers<\/span>, on 19 January,<\/span>\u00a02019,<\/span>\u00a0the state television\u00a0<\/span>aired a so called<\/span>\u00a0\u201cdocumentary\u201d in which Bakhshi\u00a0<\/span>and Ali Nejati, a member of the board of directors of Haft Tapeh Sugarcane workers, along with a few others, were\u00a0<\/span>sh<\/span>own, confessing<\/span>\u00a0to their<\/span>\u00a0\u201ccrimes<\/span>\u201d of connecting with \u201cMarxist\u201d and \u201ccommunist\u201d groups in Iran<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0labour activists<\/span>\u00a0abroad.<\/span>\u00a0But since the public knows<\/span>\u00a0very well<\/span>\u00a0these statements were made under torture<\/span>\u00a0and threats<\/span>, there has been a great backlash against the government and increased public sympathy for\u00a0<\/span>Esma<\/span>e<\/span>il<\/span>Bakhshi<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>li Nejati and other tortured detainees<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Islamic Republic<\/span>\u00a0of Iran and its intelligence and judiciary forces are<\/span>\u00a0aiming not only to discredit Sugarcane workers<\/span>\u2019<\/span>protests by this \u201cdocumentary\u201d but also to use it as a prelude and as an excuse to unleash a massive, nation-wide campaign of repression against all protesting workers and their supporters.<\/span>\u00a0In that so called \u201cdocumentary\u201d they have also plotted against Ahvaz steel workers and their strike actions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms. Sepideh Gholian,\u00a0<\/span>an independent journalist and social activist,\u00a0<\/span>who was\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>arrested<\/span>\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span>November<\/span>\u00a018, 2018<\/span>\u00a0because of her solidarity<\/span>\u00a0efforts in support of sugarcane workers,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>subject to inhumane physical and psychological torture<\/span>\u00a0during her detention as well<\/span>. Ms. Gholian\u2019s response to airing of this \u201cdocumentary\u201d was to emphasis the fact that all her statements while she was incarcerated were detained through torture. The international\u00a0<\/span>labour<\/span>\u00a0movement knows really well about the anti-worker and repressive policies and practices of the\u00a0<\/span>Islamic Republic of Iran\u00a0<\/span>and its\u00a0<\/span>bloody history of repression in the past forty years, and all the reports and evidence at the moment points to yet another massive<\/span>\u00a0nation-wide campaign of\u00a0<\/span>repression at work. We urge all progressive individuals, Human Rights institutions and Labo<\/span>u<\/span>r unions and organizations to stand with incarcerated Iranian workers and their supporters, and to demand their immediate and unconditional release.<\/span><\/p>\n
